Phantasmagoria

cdfisher So happy to find this polished gem in the gravel and dirt that often passes for indie music. Solid rhythms, evocative writing, and seductively melodic guitar work from Graves and Hartley. This is true art rock! I gauge an album's worth by how replayable it is, and I've had this one on playback for over a week. Have hardly listened to anything else. Track for track, I strongly recommend. But for the full experience, put on a pair of headphones, close your eyes, and listen from beginning to end.
Favorite track: Cain and the Fireboys.

He was a black boy, taste of candy-apple on his tongue; She was a white girl, side-by-side they stood in love so young; They bought the ticket for the ride and stepped into the car; Crashing through seven doors, they climbed the hill into the deepest dark! Oh! In the night Can you see, see the light? In the dark, hold me tight And we’ll see, it’s alright! In spite of the snakes and skeletons that rattle in the dark; In spite of the sign that warned of swift removal from the park; They left the track and found a place behind a scene of gore And traded passions in the halls of this Phantasmagoria! Oh! In the night Can you see, see the light? In the dark, hold me tight And we’ll see, it’s alright! Adam and Eve were walking; They were alone and talking, Watching a star, so small, Burning beyond the wall. And it was a lovely garden, But Daddy was always watching, Weighing the bad and good; He never understood; Adam and Eve were walking; They were alone and talking: In the glade, There was an Apple.

Runaways 07:25
There’s so much I want to see so take my hand and run away with me right through the gatekeepers into the verdant black. They can wave that fiery sword — but baby we’re not going back! Can you hear it sighing in the trees, beyond these houses and sanctuaries? We tasted the fruit, all dripping down, that juice was sensual. Now there’s something out there that I wanna know! Be my shelter and I’ll be your light We don’t need no guide Let our hearts decide, oh And if judgement fall on where we lie, let it fall like feathers, ‘cuz here together We stand. So let ’em cry Just let them weep, baby They talk of angels falling, but their own paths are steep. And now they’re staring as if they’re not wearing mortal skin! If there’s something beyond here, I wanna know! Be my shelter and I’ll be your light We don’t need no guide Let our hearts decide, oh And if judgement fall on where we lie, let it fall like feathers, ‘cuz here together We stand. (Born in succession: Love and Transgression. Born in transgression: Love is succession.)

I caught the message from the radio When all alone was all I had It blew right through me like a heavy snow It said there’s good in feelin’ bad It set the match to my My kerosene It stole the color From my dreams And it felt like Everything I need I burned my Guess T-shirt and stonewashed jeans All I wanna wear is black Gave away my Motley Crue and Roxxette tapes And I don’t ever want them back Cuz there’s a fire Burning me From the outside, You can’t see, And if I die at Seventeen Give my younger brother Everything, everything!

And you now remember: You were 12 years old When you first heard it calling Like a long steam-train, in the late-late night When the leaves started falling And the softness of her skin, when you held her close, Said you’d be with her always Then the frost blew in -- and what Heaven knows Can’t help heal your heartache Don’t matter which way you run Something wicked this way comes Bodies, they undress for bed Words whispered by lips of red They’re watching you through the fence The veil of your innocence The silk, from the spider, spun Something wicked this way comes! Were you all alone? Was it on a Sunday? The sound of you crying Brought your mom upstairs, but what could she know Of living and dying, The body, the bread, the blood in the cup Of faith and the maker, And the guilt you feel for the wordless joy Of animal nature! Don’t matter which way you run Something wicked this way comes Bodies, they undress for bed Words whispered by lips of red They’re watching you through the fence The veil of your innocence The silk, from the spider, spun Something wicked this way comes!

It's always something! It never fails! Waiting to catch you with teeth and nails! From outta nowhere! TEN TIMES YOUR SIZE! This alligator eat you alive! Just when you thought it was behind you and the coast is clear It sets upon you and it makes you want to disappear Wipe those tears away They got no use at all The weakness you betray is the name they're sure to call So watch those words you say And stand up straight and tall -- And wipe those tears away! It always follows you around! You can't escape it! It's written down! Come like a postcard, right to your door! Ain't even no surprise no more, well... Across the town could have been anyone but now it's here it's such a mess well I suggest you better listen here: Wipe those tears away They got no use at all The weakness you betray is the name they're sure to call So watch those words you say And stand up straight and tall -- And wipe those tears away!

She's Gone 02:08
Call out the boys She’s up and gone again Give the hounds the dress And let go of their chains… She’ll be mine again! Before the night is through In one piece or many She’ll be back with me Or she will be in me! And I know it sounds cruel From the lips of this fool I’ve searched this world through and through And the only one for me is you!
7.
Ain't no trick telling how it started Just a twitch of the heart An animal within your blood awakened howling Hallelujah! Spot of moon in the place you're hiding holds your heart in its tide Flesh and bone And hair! And hunger never-ending! Mountains move ya! It's just a question of unfathomable size: What defines you, anyway? Down a hall of mirrors you'll go, chasing your disguise until it suits you. Fare thee well! Lost behind you evermore, Such sweetness, never to restore, The warning perched upon the door, (Quoth the raven) Quoth the raven, “Nevermore!” Little one, Ain’t no tale I’m telling. We are flawed by design. Twice we’re born, The sheep is shorn, the wolf is waiting Howling through ya! So come stand next to me And see why my teeth Are so bright and shiny… It's just a question of unfathomable size: What defines you, anyway? Down a hall of mirrors you'll go, chasing your disguise until it suits you. Fare thee well! Lost behind you evermore, Such sweetness, never to restore, The warning perched upon the door, (Quoth the raven) Quoth the raven, “Never--” Here to stay forever! Quoth the raven, “Nevermore!”

When your hands are small and your body slight And you’re just a frag-a-ment of a mel-o-dee -- oh! And your stars align but you can’t take flight, You’re not a little bit like me! And I am a captain of the universe, one tiny boat in the sea No port of call, no direction at all! Millions have gone before me! When I’m battle-scarred, and when my hands are tired, take me home. Vessel be bound in a tourniquet, send me that wave of relief! Damage be done — but we live through this one! Lifetimes have flashed before me! May our love be long, but when I’m dead and gone — Let me rot.

Healed! 05:09
Clearly, you recall a revival They brought her to the stage in the light The body in the hands of the faithful Never walk again, ‘til he cried: “You are healed! You are healed!” Certain that your family would shame you Holding all your secrets inside So you wore the clothes that they gave you Told if you believe, you’ll be fine You are healed! You are healed! Alone in the dark you’ll find In the wild in the back of your mind You are the natural kind And it’s alright The curses that they’re dealin’ You can’t let ‘em keep you in Scared as you are, I know that you can understand! Fear is what you face in the mirror No one knows the battle you fight The bullies on the bus call you queer, And the thing that hurts the most is, they’re right. You are healed! You are healed! Alone in the dark you’ll find In the wild in the back of your mind You are the natural kind And it’s alright The curses that they trade in You can’t let ‘em fence you in Alone as you are, I know that you can understand! You are healed! You are healed!

Systems failed you’ve had your warning, now your world will come crashing down Into the abysmal darkness, where evil is lurking and vices are found My light’s been dimmed down inside me, there’s nothing around but this dark lonely shroud Evil stalking and listening, we're watching… waiting for your arrival home (Ah, ah, ah) It’s a long fall from where you are (Ah, ah, ah) We tried to warn you, we've shown you the signs (Ah, ah, ah) Hold on tight, you’re going down Ooo-ooh We want you on your knees, the one you pray to won’t help you now You’ve cursed your children, their children, with lies and greed and a mask of love You’ve doomed us all to this fate, making us weak so the monsters come out Hallowed horrors in the corridor, waiting for you to show them when (Ah, ah, ah) It’s a long fall from where you are (Ah, ah, ah) We tried to warn you, we've shown you the signs (Ah, ah, ah) Hold on tight, you’re going down Ooo-ooh

Nothing fun ever happens here, he said, Striking a match and igniting his brother As we gathered near the gas-cans Smoking and laughing as the flames grew higher... He held a razor like a paintbrush, cutting the Truth, raw and bleeding, in the bellies of swine Our homeroom teacher fell to his knees, praising the Curve and the cut of the line Said, “Ooh, you better look out for this one! 'Cuz he’s a killer for sure!” Nothing cool at the car-park, so he fashioned a piece made of meathooks and teen! It struck a nerve with the Paris Review, It had a compelling aesthetic principle! Ooo, and all the mothers across the land Brought their babies to touch his hand He became the special man, And we were The Firebrand… From ten or twenty dustbowl towns to Maybe a hundred a thousand or more They were fucking in the streets! They were painting in blood! They were calling out his name! Soon they were chewing-off their own hands and feet, they were They were trampling each other to please us! We brought the madness first-class coast-to-coast! Like the Beatles we were bigger than Jesus! Oh, how to measure a mind like that? He was Always a step ahead, a font of fashion -- Signing his name with a blood-red passion! Yeah, and that piggy was rich and fat! Violence is a song from the heart! Art is murder, and murder is art! … Nothing cool ever happens here, he said We were lying in his bed, all warm and numbered. Nothing cool ever happens here, he said And put a gun to his head. Oh, what a beautiful bang! (Bang, bang!) His finest work! A masterpiece! Oh, we started singing his name! Oh, Cain! Oh, Cain! Hey, we love you man! Oh, what a beautiful bang! (Bang, bang!) His finest work! A masterpiece! Oh, we’re still singing his name! Oh, Cain! Oh, Cain! The song goes on forever!

All is Lost? 06:26
Black on black, or so they say: The clothes of the enemy make him so hard to see in the dead of the night until he is right upon you. Some slight of hand The deal, and the card hidden upsleeve secrets and plans revealed as the cellblock surrounds you All is lost All is not lost All is lost A shadow moves in the darkness... ( . . . ) Your kin turn around his tongue in their mouths the mask is off his face is everywhere "Give us a sign watch all the stars fall from the sky black as the final curtain live if you dare Hope and despair will pair in your head; the trick is, now, holding them side by side like the blue and the red." And that's what he said, before he consumed the poison. Some slight of hand The deal and the card hidden upsleeve secrets and plans revealed as the cellblock surrounds you All is lost All is not lost All is lost All is not--!

about

Come one, come all! Take a wild ride through darkness and light! Bristling with big guitars, a Gothic backbone, psychedelic shifts of mood -- and a seductive sense of melody -- Phantasmagoria is our third self-produced album. It is a trove of mazes and monsters.

Kicking-off with a song about two young lovers sneaking out of their cart to make-out in the halls of a haunted-house, the album explores a “Midwestern Gothic” vibe. Tales of werewolves and murderers overlap with songs about adolescence, religious oppression, forbidden love, and transgression. There are interconnections to discover.

We named this album after the Phantasmagoria haunted-house, which operated at Bell’s Amusement Park, in our home-base of Tulsa, Oklahoma, from 1972 through the park’s closure in 2006. Designed by the legendary Bill Tracy, in coordination with the family of Robert Bell, Sr., it was a remarkable attraction in its heyday, as well as an expression of the fears and anxieties of the culture that produced it. It no longer exists.

Our album offers a similar "dark ride" experience, wrapped in a certain nostalgia for eras lost. Step inside, won't you?
